Email list is being updated & other technological updates!

January 17th, 2012

Hello Lulu fans! For the new year, we are busy working on designing a brand spanking new website for you, a weekly email newsletter, and many other technological upgrades! This process is a long, slow & very important one, so please pardon our dust as we test, work out bugs & basically re-invent our wheel, with the end desire being a better experience for you all! We’ll even be integrating this blog into the new site… and actually posting on it! There will be several stages of change during this process, but we will try to make it as seamless as possible for you!

Our first update is a weekly newsletter which will highlight what’s going on in Japan, the Mesa store, events, production, pre-order updates & what’s new in stock! We’ll continue to refine & add to this newsletter over time, but as of last week, we are sending basics out weekly. If you have not gotten our last 2 weekly emails, please sign up here:

Thank you so much for your patience as we work hard to improve your experience. And please remember, we always value your input, so feel free to send any questions/comments directly to: amy@lulubelltoys.com. Just keep in mind I now receive over 100 email per day (O_O), so it may take me 24-48 hours to respond, but I do my best to get back as quickly as possible!

Thank you everyone! We’re excited to get massively updated in 2012!

Grody gets charitable for our pals at GR!

September 20th, 2011

Lulubell Toys & Grody Shogun are pleased to support our friends at Giant Robot by being a part of their upcoming benefit show, “Robots”.

Grody Shogun’s latest mash-up of goodies, Nerd Pellets, will rear their charitable heads for the first time ever at  the “Robots, A Benefit for GR2″ show, which opens September 24 and runs through October 12th. All the proceeds from this robot themed show will benefit the GR2 gallery and help allow it to continue to provide the amazing space for renowned and up & coming artists to share their work!  Be sure to check out this fun event in person or online after the show opening! (Grody fans, please note: This version of Nerd Pellets were made exclusively by Grody Shogun to donate to this show, and will not be offered up anywhere else!)

ABOUT GIANT ROBOT & the GR2 Show:

Giant Robot 1 retail space began art exhibitions including Ai Yamaguchi and kozyndan. The space was limiting and art as we know it today was a limited world that was just beginning to bubble.

Opening in 2003, Giant Robot 2 or “GR2″ has hosted exhibitions by well known, soon to be well known and new young artists. The first exhibition in the space was by renown artist David Choe. Following exhibitions included Saelee Oh, Deth P. Sun, kozyndan, Barry McGee, Souther Salazar, Eishi Takaoka, Masakatsu Sashie, and many others who exhibit at many locations around the world. We’ve since worked with new waves of artists who’ve also moved forward at a rapid pace as well. Then yet another wave, and so forth. Giant Robot 2 has often and free exhibited young artists at an expense. In the end, who pays for the promotion, rent, staffing, etc? We do.

We’re not like many other establishments who force artists into contracts. We try and nurture artists so they can have their freedom. At times it works well. Our track record is powerful. But again, how does this get paid for? The hindering economy leaves us with less options, and a benefit show featuring our artist friends will carry us for a healthy amount of time and we hope to have your support. The goal for GR2 is for the space to be self sustaining as an art space in 2012 and on. We’ll release more news on our plans, soon.

Artists include:

Apak, Andrice Arp, Gary Baseman, Robert Bellm, Jill Bliss, Aaron Brown, Buff Monster, Jon Burgerman, Youjung Byun, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, James Chong, Luke Chueh, Josh Cochran, Eleanor Davis, Evah Fan, Ulises Farinas, Jesse Fillingham, Jordan Fu, Matt Furie, Susie Ghahremani, Katherine Guillen, Clement Hanami, Nao Harada, Seonna Hong, David Horvath, Martin Hsu, Mari Inukai, Yellena James, James Jean, Hellen Jo, Kaori Kasai, James Kochalka, kozyndan, Le Merde, Tessar Lo, Barry Mcgee, Miso, Junko Mizuno, Tru Nguyen, Saelee Oh, Saejean Oh, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Ming Ong, Martin Ontiveros, John Pham, Sidney Pink, Ferris Plock, Jarrett Quon, Albert Reyes, Grant Reynolds, Dr. Romanelli, Luke Rook, Souther Salazar, Rob Sato, Scrappers, Ryan Jacob Smith, Space Invader, Deth P. Sun, Daria Tessler, Mark Todd, Kelly Tunstall, Aiyana Udesen, Edwin Ushiro, Esther P. Watson, Jing Wei, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang and more!

First Release from Grody Shogun: クモの巣を食べる妖怪 グランプス Ojisan & Karakuri

June 30th, 2011

Lulubell is proud to present the first original figure releases from Grody Shogun, クモの巣を食べる妖怪 グランプス (Granpusu the web eater). His name is Ojisan and he is a vain little Yokai (Japanese folk spirit). He’s also kinda lazy, so he made a Karakuri (edo era self-automated robots) in his own image. Actually, Ojisan spends more time setting up his Karakuri then if he went out a collected webs himself.

Ojisan is made to scale, approx 10cm. (3.5″), the actual size of an average Ojisan you’d find in any home. Both have three points of articulation and stand on their own, for the most part. :)

Ojisan & his Karakuri go up for pre-sale this Saturday at Noon Pacific at www.lulubelltoys.com They are cast in milky white vinyl & covered in amazing Technicolor spray goodness from head to toe! Sold individually for $23 each.

The Quickening!

June 23rd, 2011

The Quickening is a whole new arena, one that pits painter against painter. And where you, the disconcerting collector will act as judge, jury and executioner. Your choice, your purchase, will seal the fate and doom one unlucky artist to suffer insurmountable humiliation. You will have blood on your hands.

Every few weeks Velocitron with battle it out with Grody Shogun. Buddies and studio mates who craft magic and joy during the day go head to head in this winner take all bout. The goal is simple, be the the first to sell out your painted run by any means necessary. The stakes however are high, before every conflict each side draws up losing terms. To the victor goes the accolades and love of the masses and the loser is faced with completing the shameful challenge before him. Is this infantile? Yes. Is this what happens when two grown men-children work long hours together late into the night? Double yes. Will this be funny as hell, totally.

First up is Marmit x Amarpro’s Penanggalan, an angry vampiric head and entrails. Perfect first figure? Probably not! Painted on a GID base with long flowing brown hair. She goes up for pre-sale on Saturday, June 25th at Noon Pacific for $30 each. Super limited, equal sized runs.

Grody Shogun Penanggalan

Grody Shogun Penanggalan

Velocitron Penanggalan

The stakes? Glad you asked. Grody Shogun’s requested that the flabby and cakely Velocitron’s punishment be suffering of his own joy. He must eat his favorite, ice cream burger, in under a minute without the use of his pudgy little sausage fingers. And if Velocitron sells out first? He has challenged Luke to a bitter soda sludgefest. The victor will videotape the defeated for your YouTube witnessing pleasure. Let the games begin.

Introducing Grody Shogun!

June 23rd, 2011

I am grody, I am gross, I am a virus, a spore growing on the surface of all the pretty things. I am small now but growing voraciously. I am hungry.

Grody Shogun is me. I am an artist and a toy making machine. I have giving up any sense of normalcy, in it’s place I live and breath only to produce. I survive on the info passed down to me from the masters living and working in the sofubi world. I am a sponge soaking up any little bit I can. I do this for you and for I do this for us. We must cherish the old ways and do all we can to keep them alive.

This is my apprenticeship, I take it very seriously. My masters are all around me. I honor them in my work. I begin humble and my pricing will reflect that. As I grow and my skills sharpen I will to charge what the those before me charge. This is my bowing to you, the toy fan, the oddball, the lover of randomness, the collector. I work within this rich community of craftsmen and artisans. This living bivouac nourishes me gives me the strength to go on. I am grateful for this opportunity to connect with the living past and the vibrant present.

This is a commitment and a proclamation, I will not stop. There will be no rest. I am servant, a servant to sofubi.  Join me.

Luke Rook is an artist and toy promoter living and working in Tokyo. He has been buying and selling for himself and Lulubell Toy Bodega for over five years now. His commitment to the life and stability of the toy world has driven him to on this new phase in both his and Lulubell’s path. You can expect Grody Shogun to bring the some of the weirdest shit you’ve ever seen. Like it or hate it Luke’s Grody Shogun is here to stay.

Look for Grody Shogun at Lulubell or many of your other favorite shops and galleries. You’ll probably notice a below then average retail price. This is no mistake, this is a commitment from Luke to you, the collecting community at large. There’s no real saying how long this “apprentice” pricing will last but please know that it comes from a deep respect to the toy makers and brands already carried by Lulubell. We hope you will enjoy the work of Luke for Grody Shogun and have as much fun as we do providing it for you.

Love and veggie chicken grease from the whole Lulu crew.
